Fredericton Christian Academy (FCA) offers programs of study in Canada. This guide is for readers of any citizenship. The documents required depend on citizenship and on the length of the program, so each family should confirm the requirements for the student’s own case.
What is required to enter Canada
- Travel document: this depends on citizenship. Citizens of some countries use an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization), and citizens of others need a visitor visa. In both cases, a valid passport is required.
- The eTA is not a visa.
- The official entry requirements page shows which document applies to each citizenship.
Documents for each program
Summer Camp
A Study Permit (Canadian authorization to study) is not required for programs of six months or less. The student needs a valid travel document: an eTA or a visitor visa, depending on citizenship.
Mini High School and Mini High School Experience
The same conditions apply: if the program does not exceed six months, a Study Permit is not required, and the student needs an eTA or a visitor visa, depending on citizenship.
High School semester (5 months)
This program also lasts less than six months: a Study Permit is not required, and the student needs an eTA or a visitor visa, depending on citizenship. A Study Permit may still be requested; without one, a student cannot work in Canada. If studies are expected to exceed six months, the Study Permit must be requested before entering Canada.
High School: school year or several years
A Study Permit is required for programs longer than six months. A Study Permit for high school can cover the planned period, up to 4 years.
How to apply
eTA
Application instructions are available on the official eTA page.
Visitor visa
The application follows the steps on the official Government of Canada application page.
Study Permit
- The application is made online, before entering Canada, following the official instructions.
- The school’s letter of acceptance is required.
- Applicants aged 14 to 79 generally need to provide biometrics, which are normally valid for 10 years.
- The eTA or visitor visa is issued with the Study Permit, with no separate application or extra fee.
Students who are minors and custodianship
Under official Canadian rules, a student under 17 who comes to Canada without their parents must have a custodian (legal guardian) in Canada, who must be an adult and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. From age 17, a custodian is optional, but the officer may request one. The custodianship declaration is made on form IMM 5646. The custodian’s part is notarized in Canada and the parents’ part in their country of origin.
The age of majority in New Brunswick is 19. For this reason, all FCA students under 19 must have a custodian.
Recognition of studies in the country of origin
Recognition of studies completed in Canada is decided by the authorities and institutions of the student’s country of origin. Families are encouraged to confirm the requirements with them before departure.
